Indebtedness, insolvency and collections
There can be little doubt that consumer indebtedness is a major problem facing modern economies. In the UK high-profile debt cases appear in the mainstream media almost weekly, with many having unsecured debts in excess of six figures.

As a result, there are a number of Government initiatives to encourage responsible lending combined with the threat of further regulation of the industry. Responsible lending also makes good commercial sense, as all credit grantors would agree that it can reduce write offs and increase profitability. Full data sharing across the credit industry is already playing a part in delivering more accurate lending decisions. However, data sharing on its own is not the complete solution. Each consumer’s level of indebtedness needs to be properly quantified and a comprehensive review on a consumer’s ability to repay cannot be carried out unless other factors, such as their income, are also taken into consideration.

Although not all over indebted individuals will become insolvent, it is clear that all insolvents will have been over indebted, so it follows that they will have been in the collections process. Combining this behavioural information from collections with the latest bureau data and applying sophisticated analytics and best practice decisioning is providing collections professionals with a far greater insight into the management of indebted customers.
